Your First PRO Trimmer Haircut: The Fixed-Blade Route
Lesson 10 of 12 · Grooming for pet parents
This lesson is the PRO alternative to the D-Series haircut route. It uses a fixed FlexFit blade to keep the first setup clear. Work only on an appropriate growing coat, after practical instruction on your own dog, and after completing the preparation lessons.
Choose one PRO configuration
The main example is the VUNRO PRO trimmer fitted with the 3F FlexFit PRO 12.5 mm blade. This is a fixed-length blade. Follow the fitting instructions while the device is off, check it is secure and put unused parts away.
Do not fit the six-piece PRO guard set over a fixed F blade. That set belongs on a compatible FlexFit PRO 4-in-1 head. If you choose that alternative, confirm the required head setting from the supplied instructions before use. The 12 mm PRO guard is a different setup from the 12.5 mm fixed blade; do not assume that the two will produce identical results.
Keeping one configuration for the lesson makes it easier to understand what is happening. If you change blades, note the change and start again with the fitting and test-patch checks rather than treating it as a continuation of the same pass.
Confirm the coat is ready
The intended cutting area must be clean, fully dry near the roots and gently combable. A fluffy surface can hide remaining tangles. Check with a suitable comb before switching on, and make sure the dog is already comfortable with the tool's appearance, sound and touch.
A small trimmer is still a cutting tool. Do not use it to force through matting or assume that a fine-looking blade makes delicate anatomy suitable for beginners. If the dog is uncomfortable, the skin is unclear or the coat preparation is incomplete, postpone the haircut.
Work through one easy section
- Use the broad body area your groomer has demonstrated, with the dog standing comfortably on a nonslip surface.
- Follow the agreed direction with coat growth, keeping the blade face positioned as demonstrated and pressure light.
- Make a short pass and move the trimmer away before inspecting the coat or changing your supporting hand.
- Check the dog's response and blade warmth before the next pass.
- Comb the finished section into its natural fall and decide whether it actually needs further work.
The number on a blade is a guide to the tool's cutting length, not a promise about the outline of every coat. Curly, wavy and silky hair can sit differently. A small test patch gives you information before you extend the cut across the body.
Avoid digging with the teeth, repeated scraping over a stubborn patch or speeding up because the dog is becoming impatient. End the section and take a break instead.
Leave difficult areas for practical help
This body lesson does not teach close face work, ear edges, hygiene areas, armpits, tight folds or thin skin. Only progress to accessible leg areas after a groomer has shown you safe positioning on your dog. Keep limbs natural; do not pull them into place to reveal more coat.
Stop if the blade pulls, catches, becomes too warm or sounds different. Move away immediately if the dog shifts or becomes distressed. A guard or fixed blade cannot make all contact safe, and the goal is not to finish at any cost.
Check a problem before another pass
Switch off, then recheck coat preparation, attachment fit and blade condition. Follow the supplied cleaning and lubrication instructions. Do not attempt blade alignment, sharpening or improvised repairs to get through the groom.

Record the exact PRO blade or head-and-guard combination, the area completed and how the coat looked when combed naturally. Note breaks and any part to leave for professional help. A controlled small section is a useful first result; the rest can wait until preparation and comfort are ready again.
